Inauguration Day! Welcome Madam VP

Writer's picture: Crystal HolmesCrystal Holmes

Today is finally here! There is so much to say on how monumental and historical this day is, but you already know that. To be alive and witness such an empowering day is beyond words. Not only is Madam Vice President Kamala Harris the FIRST woman Vice President, but she is the FIRST BLACK & South Asian woman (heavy on the black). To be perfectly honest, did I ever think in my lifetime I would be able to witness a moment or day such as this? No. Did I ever believe this day would happen..someday? Yes. With Hilary Clinton running for President during the 2016 election, that to me was a sign of hope that as a woman you can get to the White House. Four years later and not only is there a seat at the table, but the seat is right next to the President of the United States Joe Biden. These actions speak volumes on so many levels. For a white man to see fit to have a black woman by his side during his position in office, shows the heart of where he stands on equality and race in America.

The glass ceiling is broken. Let me re-phrase it is shattered. Let's discuss how this now opens the already open door even further for ALL woman of black and brown descent. You ARE enough. You CAN be ANYTHING. Here is the example right before us. There is always the saying that you can do anything you put your mind to, as long as you believe. For every woman who holds any political position, I have much respect because I know the story and journey to get there was a fight like no other. I'm thankful for the women who took on the challenge and believed enough to know that they CAN. I rejoice with tears in my eyes because even in times as black people when we are let down by this country and this justice system, we still RISE. So much happened in 2020, and even today the fight is still going against racism in this country. God teaches us in his word to pray for our enemies and those who chastise against us. I pray for those who have so much hate, that they one day find peace. Peace to love and release the hate in their heart. You would think now, there would be some change with everything happening, but it is more prevelant than ever that this is just the beginning. So let us pray.

These next 4 years will be a challenge I'm sure. It is one thing to be in the White House, but another to work with those who may not agree with everything you want to see changed. This change I believe will be good for us. There will be things that won't happen because hey, its politics right? However, the effort and what the Biden-Harris administration will put forward, I feel will be meaningful especially after the past 4 years we have had to endure.

Lastly, I am proud and honored to celebrate my sister, Madam Vice President Kamala Harris today as she embarks on this next journey. So many great women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. have made a powerful stance in the history of this country along with many others of the Divine Nine. I must say she's already made her voice clear. As she would say, "I'm Speaking." #kamalaharrisday #AKA #1908 #myVPlookslikeme #HerStory #Inaugurationday #JoeBiden
